The Marine Skipper is responsible for the safe operation and presentation of company vessels, delivering a professional, safe and reliable service in a remote and exposed island environment. Marine Skippers operate a mixed fleet of small commercial vessels and are central to keeping a safe, professional and dependable service running every day. The marine fleet is the lifeline of The Tanera Project, providing essential connectivity between the mainland and the island and supporting day-to-day operations, project delivery, research activity and events. It is a multi-vessel, multi-class commercial operation involving passenger transport, cargo movements and fuel transfers year-round, including night operations, in a remote and exposed environment within a Marine Protected Area.
Safely operate company vessels, including Luggers, for passenger, crew, cargo and logistical movements, undertaking authorised fuel transfers where required. Responsibilities include voyage planning, navigation, weather assessment, crew coordination and sound seamanship. Deliver a professional guest experience, ensuring safe embarkation and disembarkation. Maintain vessel readiness, cleanliness and presentation, uphold operational standards, and ensure compliance with safety procedures, emergency preparedness, pollution prevention and incident reporting requirements.
Candidates should demonstrate experience in commercial or passenger vessel operations, crew transfers, marine logistics, traditional sail handling or operating independently in challenging coastal environments. Strong seamanship, boat handling, tidal planning, weather assessment and passenger safety knowledge are essential. Experience in fuel transfers, landing craft operations and marine logistics is highly desirable, alongside local knowledge, hospitality experience and the ability to make sound operational decisions in remote and demanding conditions. A full list of required qualifications is listed in the job description download link below.
