Our Story
The haven at Tanera Mòr is one of the best natural anchorages in the North.
It has provided shelter and access to our wild seas through the ages, from Viking longships to 18th century herring fleets.
Tanera was once a pioneering site of the Scottish herring industry.
At its peak, herring were caught, processed, packaged, and exported from the island all around the world.
As the industry declined, the island followed.

In the late nineteenth century, the island had around one-hundred and twenty inhabitants.
By the twenty-first century there were only a handful of people living and working on the island.
Now, in 2025, there are over one-hundred and fifty people working on island as part of the Tanera project.
Tanera brings communities together.
From our neighbours in Coigach, Assynt and around Loch Broom, to those restoring traditional boats, working the sea, or protecting the land, to guests and charities supporting public service workers; each plays a part in reimagining this place.
Together, we’re building a future where people, place, and nature can thrive together. This is a place of wholeness - a place to experience both the haven and the storm.
